THE THOUGHT OF a world without toilet paper is a disgusting one. What would we do? Where could we turn? Would we actually have to DEAL with our…emissions?

This is reality for a blogger from Toronto, Canada, who has embraced the icky and ditched toilet paper almost completely for reusable cloth wipes.

Explaining the transition to Rick O’Shea on 2FM this morning, Kathleen said the new way of life arose from having an “increasing discomfort” with disposable items in general and a heightened environmental awareness.

We had a baby and used cloth diapers and wipes. I thought, if we can do it with the baby why not with ourselves?

So Kathleen cut up an old flannel baby blanket into squares and started using them instead, and washing them after.

She said the reaction to her venture has been mixed:

Honestly, I mostly talk to people about it online, I blog about it. Some people say “Ew, I could never do that”, but some people think it’s interesting. Maybe I just have a high tolerance to that kind of thing.

Kathleen hasn’t completely cut toilet paper from her life – she stocks her bathroom with regular toilet paper for visitors, and uses it herself when out and about.

She told anyone who was thinking of trying cloth wipes that they can use them in any way they feel comfortable doing:

You can just use it for number one, and use toilet paper for number two. Then you’re only using toilet paper once or twice a day.
